Future of Ukraine discussed in the European Parliament

The 15th of May can be called the Ukraine day. On this day Leonidas Donskis together with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) held a conference in which a number of Ukrainian intellectuals, human rights activists, and members from the Ukrainian opposition parties discussed the prospects of European integration for Ukraine. Can we dry Tibetan tears?

On Wednesday, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) held the annual conference on Tibet in the European Parliament in Brussels. These conferences have already become a tradition of the current EP term. The main topics of this year`s event "Tears of Tibet", organised by the Estonian ALDE member Kristiina Ojuland and Lithuanian MEP Leonidas Donskis, included the growing number of self-immolations, the consequences of the Chinese policies on human rights and environment in Tibet, and EU and EP role in addressing these problems more effectively. Anne Applebaum`s book: an intellectual challenge for the Eastern European academics

Yesterday, invited by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) political group, a Pulitzer Prize winner, American journalist Anne Applebaum has visited the European Parliament in Brussels and presented her new book "Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944 - 56". China: "modern" capitalism and horror stories

Yesterday, the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) together with the EP vice-president for human rights and democracy and the colleague of Leonidas Donskis from the ALDE Group, Edward McMillan-Scott organised a conference "Religious persecution by China: a horror story". The conference aimed to make known internationally the great scale of religious prosecutions and horrible "re-education" methods used by the Chinese communist party. (Read more...)

Not only the EP staff and representatives from other EU institutions, diplomats, members of the academic community, but also guests from Lithuania, France, Italy and other countries gathered here to meet one of the most significant social thinkers of our age Professor Zygmut Bauman. Experts debated child rights and their protection in the European Parliament

Yesterday, 8 May, MEPs Leonidas Donskis (ALDE) and Traian Ungureanu (EPP, Romania) invited to the European Parlament various representatives from the EU institutions and non-governmental organisations, diplomats and experts for a discussion on child rights and their protection in the EU neighbourhood. The event "Making a Difference: Supporting Vulnerable Children in EU Neighbourhood and Enlargement Countries" was held under the initiative of international NGO "World Vision". (Read more...)
