This week MEPs gathered to an ordinary plenary session in Strasbourg where they discussed how to establish stronger EU economic governance with the Presidents of the EU institutions, as well as many other issues, such as the European Commission`s priorities for the upcoming year and preparations for the UN climate summit in South Africa. MEPs also submitted suggestions on how to facilitate employment of qualified specialists in the EU and, among other issues, decided to establish the European Heritage Label. On Wednesday MEPs also congratulated winners of the 2011 LUX film prize, "Les neiges du Kilimandjaro," made by French film makers. (Read more...)
On Wednesday, 9 November, the European Federation of Psychologists Associations (EFPA) organised a conference "Psychology - a contribution to EU policy making" at the occasion of the 30th anniversary of this organisation, which unites European national psychologists` associations. The decision to organise this event with European psychologists was made by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Group and three of its members: Leonidas Donskis, Nadja Hirsch (Germany) ir Vilja Savisaar Toomast (Estonia). On Wednesday, November 9, MEP Leonidas Donskis, together with the Permanent Representations of Lithuania and Poland to the EU, organised the 100th birth anniversary event of Nobel Prize winner, poet and essayist Czeslaw Milosz in the European Parliament in Brussels.
For the third academic year in a row VšĮ „Atvira visuomenė ir jos draugai“ is organising L. Donskis’ and E. Gentvilas’ awards competition for best students. This academic year of 2011-2012 there are, as usual, four awards for Bachelor’s and Master’s level works. (Read more...)

The European Parliament Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought in 2011 goes to five representatives of the Arab people, in recognition and support of their drive for freedom and human rights. It will be presented to the winners by President Jerzy Buzek at Parliament`s formal session in Strasbourg, on 14 December. (Read more...)
