Lithuanian MEPs belonging to the three largest political groups in the EP have registered a written declaration on the safety of nuclear power plants in the EU’s neighbourhood. Leonidas Donskis (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, ALDE), Radvile Morkunaite-Mikuleniene (European People’s Party, EPP), Zigmantas Balcytis, and Justas Vincas Paleckis (Socialists & Democrats, S&D) united their efforts in order to achieve a wider attention from the EU’s institutions, member states, and international organisations on an issue which is very important to Lithuania, namely the safety of the nuclear power plants on the borders of Lithuania and the EU, to be built in Belarus and the Kaliningrad area.
On 29-30 April MEP Leonidas Donskis attended a conference dedicated to the issues of human rights in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. L. Several years ago I could only dream that one day I will stand for Lithuania’s interests at the European Parliament. I raise my country`s card; the president of the General Assembly gives me the floor. I get to the stand and I give my speech against the resolution of the European Economic and Monetary Affairs committee, which did not come up with any innovations. Delegates start a racket. On 2-3 April, in Kaunas, Vytautas Magnus University, the fourth National Political Science Olympiad final was held, which involved 14 of the best performing high school students from the first phase of the Olympiad, from all over Lithuania.
Although the agenda of the plenary sessions is planned up to a few months or even a year in advance, the tragedy in Japan in March has significantly modified the order of the questions planned for the session in April. While the Members of European Parliament were planning to express their position regarding nuclear security in a special resolution, a unanimous solution was not reached. (Read more...)
