Traditional donors not the only players in the EU development cooperation

Yesterday and today, the European Development Days take place in Brussels. The EDD is an annual event organised by the Commission dedicated to the development policies. It includes discussions, seminars and brainstorming sessions during which more than six thousand participants exchange ideas on how the European Union, the biggest donor in the world, could improve its development cooperation efforts. EU budget voted in Strasbourg

This week`s EP plenary session in Strasbourg was vital for the EU. The EP finally approved the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2014 - 2020 and the budget for the upcoming year. The adoption of the MFF which resulted after long and complicated negotiations between different EU institutions makes it possible to take important decisions in the areas of EU cohesion policy, agriculture, the main EU education, culture, environment, infrastructure, and research policies. In the European Parliament a day for Sergei Magnitsky

This Wednesday is a long-awaited day for the former colleagues and family members, journalists and politicians around the world fighting for the comprehensive legal inquiry into the death of Sergei Magnitsky, and the rule of law in Russia. Right before the fourth anniversary of Magnitsky`s death, the first meeting of the inter-parliamentary group Justice for Sergei Magnitsky took place in the European Parliament in Brussels. Earlier that day a book Why Europe Needs a Magnitsky Law: Should the EU follow the US? by the French-Russian journalist Elenos Servettaz was presented in the EP. (Read more...)

Tibetan youth profits from the experience of Leonidas Donskis` team

This week Leonidas Donskis and his team were actively engaged in the EU-Tibetan Youth Leadership training in the European Parliament in Brussels. The training is aimed at the Tibetan youth from all over Europe who aspires to use this knowledge and competence for the peaceful fight for the preservation of the Tibetan culture and identity. Young people were learning how to effectively raise this issue within the EU institutions and in different EU states. (Read more...)

Second plenary session in October calmer than expected

October is a special month on the agenda of the European Parliament. In order to fulfil the requirements of the EU Treaties to convene in Strasbourg 12 times, this month the Members of the EP travel to the capital of Alsace twice. The EP trick of the last year to organise two two-days EP sessions in one week instead of one four-day session and to avoid the double journey to Strasbourg prompted France to bring the case before the European Court of Justice. France has won the case and therefore this year the EP returned to the old order provoking repeated discussions about the single EU seat. (Read more...)

A range of questions important for Lithuania on the EP plenary agenda

It is hard to remember an EP plenary session which included so many questions important for Lithuania. The first of the two plenary sessions in Strasbourg in October featured the issues of the shale gas extraction, fisheries policies, and the controversial tobacco directive. In addition to that, Lithuania`s progress to investigate the alleged existence of the CIA prisons in the country was assessed. (Read more...)
