"I always visit Lithuania in winter", said Leonidas Donskis after the meeting with the society and the presentation of the book "Lithuanian Liberalism II" in Ignalina on Saturday. This week MEPs gathered to an ordinary plenary session in Strasbourg. Its agenda consisted of the ways to promote economic growth in Greece, discussions with the new Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, youth unemployment, human rights violations, among many other topics. On February 23, Thursday, 2 p.m., Vytautas Magnus University (Small Hall, S. Daukanto Str. 28, 2nd floor) will host the European premiere of The Trouble With Being Human These Days, a documentary about the renowned sociologist, VMU Honorary Doctor Prof. Zygmunt Bauman. After the first-ever showing of the film in the Old Continent, a discussion will be held by its director Bartek Dziadosz and producer Grzegorz Lepiarz. It has already become a tradition that the second half of February, when no sessions in the European Parliament take place, Leonidas Donskis designates for an intensive tour of different Lithuanian cities and meetings with the public. At the end of January, after Lithuania and 21 other EU Member States signed the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) in Tokyo, MEP Leonidas Donskis as well as other MEPs started receiving a lot of complaints from citizens, who expressed their concern about the impact of this document to the freedom of internet and privacy of people. Reacting to such active Lithuanian citizens` reaction and interest to ongoing and adopted laws by the EP during the mid-term, Leonidas Donskis` office prepared a brief information sheet about the procedures that ACTA that will go through before it is adopted or ejected by the European Parliament.  (Read more...)

This Wednesday and Thursday the first out of five short plenary sessions took place in the European Parliament in Brussels. Its agenda included the conclusions of the informal European Council meeting, sanctions on Iran, assessment of the Russian Duma elections (this issue is to be voted in the next session in Strasbourg).
