Traditionally the most important European Parliament‘s plenary session when human rights issues are debated is considered to be the last EP plenary session in December. However, MEPs already discussed many significant human rights policy issues with High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton during the plenary session in Strasbourg this week. After votes in four parliamentary committees, MEPs did not support the International Anti-Counterfeiting Agreement (ACTA). The parliamentary committees on Development (DEVE), on Civil Liberties (LIBE), Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and Legal Affairs (JURI), where the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) votes were decisive, recommended rejecting the ambiguous agreement. Gentvilas` awards competition, which is organised for the third academic year in a row.
