June plenary session: important discussions on human rights issues

Traditionally the most important European Parliament‘s plenary session when human rights issues are debated is considered to be the last EP plenary session in December. However, MEPs already discussed many significant human rights policy issues with High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton during the plenary session in Strasbourg this week. L. Donskis will be drafting the main EP document on human rights

MEP Leonidas Donskis was appointed as the Rapporteur for drafting the main EP human rights document, namely the annual report on human rights in the world and the EU`s policy on this issue. Leonidas Donskis, who is the ALDE Coordinator in the Subcommittee on Human Rights since the beginning of his mandate, was appointed by the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE). The EP Committees did not approve ACTA

After votes in four parliamentary committees, MEPs did not support the International Anti-Counterfeiting Agreement (ACTA). The parliamentary committees on Development (DEVE), on Civil Liberties (LIBE), Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and Legal Affairs (JURI), where the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) votes were decisive, recommended rejecting the ambiguous agreement. The deadline to submit works for L. Donskis` and E. Gentvilas` awards competition is approaching

This year Bachelor and Master students have less than three weeks left to submit their works for L. Donskis` and E. Gentvilas` awards competition, which is organised for the third academic year in a row. Participants have to submit successfully defended Bachelor and Master works together with a recommendation from the dissertation commission. (Read more...)
