Seventh International Leonidas Donskis Conference: From Black and White to Shades of Grey
Join the Seventh Leonidas Donskis Conference, a thought-provoking event exploring the complexities of history and historiography. Under the theme "From Black and White to Shades of Grey" the conference delves into the continuous process of investigating, assessing, and re-assessing historical events to understand what truly happened.
History is not a one-dimensional narrative but rather a multifaceted diamond, revealing different facets under new light. Initial histories, often written by victors, give way to more nuanced understandings as time passes. This conference will address how re-assessments can sometimes lead to a more balanced view, yet at other times swing the pendulum to an equally disbalanced perspective influenced by the current socio-cultural context.
Various historical re-assessments will be discussed, from the Nazi occupation in Western Europe to the emerging truths about the Nazi and communist periods in Eastern Europe. The session will also cover the impact of current political developments, such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the hybrid war influencing historiography.
A special focus will be on the need to learn from history, illustrated by the case of the Rwandan genocide. We will explore the complex factors behind the tragedy, including international disinterest and bureaucratic failures, to understand the broader implications for historiography and public memory.
