Inside the vast new auditorium at the European Solidarity Centre in Gdansk, Leonidas Donskis fizzes with excitement. Having recently finished five years of service as a Member of the European Parliament, he is promoting his new book and revelling in the exchange of ideas about Europe and its neighbours. His topic is literature, or rather the ideas that literature wrestles with and conveys. “Few political scientists predicted the horrors of the twentieth century,” he declares.
